Lagos is gearing up for another cultural spectacle as the Órüpézá Festival 2025 returns to Freedom Park on Lagos Island from September 28 to October 2.
The five-day event, which coincides with Nigeria’s Independence Day (October 1), promises a vibrant mix of music, film, fashion, dance, gaming, visual arts, and food, weaving tradition and modernity into an immersive cultural experience.
A statement shared with Saturday Beats noted that last year’s edition, held during the Freedom Festival Week in September 2024, left an indelible mark on the city.
“Between fiery afrobeat anthems, soulful ballads, spoken word and comedy, the programme not only entertained but also sparked conversations on identity, legacy, and community,” it said.
The statement added that a major highlight of 2024 was the introduction of the Órüpézá Cultural Honours, celebrating icons whose work has shaped Nigeria’s creative landscape.
Honourees included respected journalist and culture advocate, Jahman Anikulapo; popular sculptor, Bruce Onobrakpeya; and veteran actress, Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett.
Their recognition underscored the festival’s mission to bridge generations and affirm culture as the bedrock of community.
Describing Órüpézá as a cultural economy in motion, the festival director, Edi Lawani, said, “Last year, we honoured legends who paved the way.
This year, we are deepening that vision by creating more platforms for youth, communities, and new stories.
The festival is about freedom, but it is also about belonging and legacy.”
The statement added that organisers are expecting an audience of over 20,000 participants.
