“I once lived in a hut” – Skales
Skales humble beginnings reveal the struggles he faced before rising to fame in Nigeria’s music industry.
Nigerian singer and songwriter Skales has shared an emotional account of his childhood struggles and the modest life he lived in Kaduna before finding success. The artist, known for his resilience, revealed that he and his late mother once lived in a hut and often slept on mats spread across the bare floor.
During a conversation on *A TownHall Different Podcast*, Skales explained that his mother, a teacher, did her best to provide despite their financial challenges. He recalled how they later moved into a small boys’ quarters, which at the time felt like a significant upgrade.
“My mum was a teacher, and we didn’t have much. We lived in a hut before moving to a BQ. We slept on the floor with mats and my mom would spread a wrapper on the floor and sleep. Coming from that kind of background to where I am today is just crazy,” he said.
Beyond the struggles of shelter, Skales also described how limited their resources were. Growing up, he never had access to a television until his career took off. His first encounter with owning a TV came only after signing with Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (EME).
“The first time I saw TV was when EME signed me. Like I had my own TV in my room. I used to switch it on and off in amazement,” he joked.
The “Shake Body” hitmaker has since carved a strong name for himself in the Nigerian music industry, turning his struggles into a story of perseverance and growth. His journey, from living in a hut to becoming a celebrated artist, continues to inspire many fans.
